WELCOME TO ARK ANIMAL HOSPITAL!

February is National Pet Dental Health Month!

Don’t ignore your pet’s bad breath – it can signal a deeper problem.  Periodontal infections can lead to painful mouth and gum infections and have been linked to diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease, and other life threatening disorders.  The best way to prevent periodontal problems is proper dental hygiene and regular checkups with your veterinarian.

— It is estimated that 80 percent of people brush their teeth every day, but far fewer pet owners do the same for their pets.

Oral disease is the most frequently diagnosed health problem for pets

          —  An astounding 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats show signs of oral disease by age 3, according to the American Veterinary Dental Society (AVDS).

          —  Periodontal disease is a common problem in dogs, particularly smaller breeds.

          —  Cats can develop painful resorptive lesions. Studies show that about 28 percent of domestic cats develop at least one of these painful lesions during their lifetime.
